Nat Turner Park

Katherine Hackl Public Art - Nat Turner Park

Nat Turner Park is a new 9 acre park in Newark NJ. This park was built by Trust for Public Land with significant community participation in its design. The tile amphitheater project was built in 2 phases. The first phase involved a series of workshops held in schools and community centers adjacent to the park. More than 150 community members created their own tiles – from working out the drawing on paper to transferring and painting the design directly to the tile. The second phase involved collecting names from community members of their favorite musicians, instruments and musical history specific to Newark. These names were then included in a series of wavelengths that alternate with the blue mosaic community tile.
